How this calculator works

A title loan uses your car as collateral and charges a fee each month based on the amount you borrowed. The calculator multiplies the loan amount by the monthly fee percentage to get the monthly charge, then multiplies that by the months you hold the loan.

Because the fee repeats monthly and the principal often does not fall, the total cost grows quickly. The calculator reports the monthly fee annualised as an APR so you can compare it with other borrowing. A title loan is secured by your vehicle, and if you cannot repay, the lender can take the car.

Title loan rules vary by state, and some states cap or prohibit the product. Enter the fee your lender quotes, and read the agreement carefully before signing anything.

Frequently asked questions

How is the monthly fee calculated?
The monthly fee is the amount borrowed multiplied by the monthly fee percentage. A 25% monthly fee on a $1,000 loan is $250 per month, charged for as long as you hold the loan.
Why is the APR shown so high?
The calculator annualises the monthly fee by multiplying it by twelve. A fee that looks manageable month to month becomes a very high yearly rate once you repeat it across a full year.
What happens if I cannot repay?
Because the loan is secured by your vehicle, the lender can repossess the car if you default. That risk is the key difference between a title loan and an unsecured advance.
Are title loans legal everywhere?
No. Payday and title lending are regulated state by state, and some states prohibit title loans or cap the rate low enough that the product cannot operate. Check your state rules before borrowing.
